Difference between mac address and ip address

An IP address is the location of a given computer or other network device on an IP network. It tells other devices where to go to "talk" to that computer/device. Think of it like a phone number.

A MAC address is kind of a serial number for network devices like ethernet cards - the first half of the MAC address tells what brand/model the card is, and the second half is a unique identifier specific to that card. Think of it like the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on your car.

Big difference. The MAC address is unique on every Network interface device and is embedded in the circuitry of the NIC card or the motherboard if integrated. The IP address is assigned by a DHCP server or manually configured in the device when it is connected to the network, and can be changed. This applies to printers as well as PC's.

Can we hide our Ip Address?

Changing mac addresses does you NO good at all. Your IP address reaches back to you, even through proxies and vpns. and you ISP would have a record of it, and whatever mac address you use. and they may terminate your service for illegally changing the mac address of your Internet connection device.

from point of view of HACKING- u usually hide ur MAC address when you're trying to hack into a system that is on the same network as you are (can be Wifi or LAN) and u need to hide your IP address when your're trying to compromise a system on the Internet or a Website. In Windows there's a freeware called 'TMacv6' (made by an Indian) that can help you disguise your MAC address. If your using linux, there's a utility called 'macchanger' that can help u change your mac to anything (more efficient)
